Once you determine that your loved one is beginning to show signs of needing assistance, you will want to begin discussing his or her needs and care options. The following advice is a shortened version of that offered by the American Health Care Association:
- Develop as much information as possible about care options, so you can be ready to answer your loved one's questions and inspire confidence.
- Ask your loved one for permission to discuss his or her need for care.
- Choose a comfortable time and place for the discussion.
- Stay positive as you offer information and be prepared for objections and the need for repeated discussions.
- Listen to your loved one, learn about his or her concerns, ideas, and hopes, and acknowledge his or her right to be involved in decisions.
- Include others who may be helpful in their knowledge of options and your loved one's needs.
