University of Maryland, College Park Student Receives $25,000 Scholarship in Honor of Her Unique Elder Care ‘Living Journal’ Project
Silver Spring Resident Sara Glickman Receives Award From Target Stores - In Renaissance Gardens Ceremony Attended by Her Grandfather
Sara Glickman, a student at the University of Maryland, received her scholarship in honor and appreciation of her unique project to create Living Journals for residents of Assisted living, skilled nursing and hospice facilities throughout Montgomery County. Her Living Journals consist of taped recordings of residents’ recollections of their families’ love and their life experiences.
Ms. Glickman, who is an accounting/finance major with plans to attend a law school, is now initiating her project at Renaissance Gardens at Riderwood, a 142-resident assisted living/skilled nursing facility in Silver Spring, MD, where her grandfather, Jack Herbst, resides. Mr. Herbst has been her muse, so-to-speak, for her creative development of her Living Journals.
Ms. Glickman recently wrote an essay entitled “My Best Friend” (a first-person narrative of her exchange between her and her late grandmother while her grandmother was in a hospice facility). The essay captured the memories of her family history/heritage. She submitted the essay to a national $1,000 scholarship competition sponsored by Target stores. Target officials liked her essay and her innovative Living Journal project so much that they decided to increase her scholarship to $25,000.
